A mostly unheard of midsize city in Northern California, Santa Rosa loves to be associated with the surrounding glory of a world-famous Wine Country.

But underneath that glam, a divided city lies. Bits of many different groups – retired San Francisco elites, longtime blue-collar Santa Rosan families, immigrant agricultural or tech workers – all exist in the city, but hardly overlap...except for in one unexpected place: adult recreation softball leagues.

I grew up in Santa Rosa, and worked at the softball fields last summer. I talk about that, public funding, city violence, cultural identity, communal unity and more on A Place to Play. I hope you enjoy.
