Senior Recital
I don’t speak Polish, nor do I have the unique inflections that define Aine and Izzy’s priceless personalities. However, I do remain connected to them through music – our other generational connection.
To honor this, I wrote snippets of our conversations into a piece of music and performed it for my senior recital. I placed excerpts of their voices onto a bed of music texture, letting the precious melodies of their voices speak freely.
I followed that original composition with a piece by Irish composer Ailís Ní Ríain entitled “The Man Made of Rain.” While my piece included the voices of my family, her piece calls for the performer to use their own voice to recite excerpts of poetry. I hoped to show how the voices of previous generations – Aine, Izzy, and Adam & Barbara – create my own voice.
